Welcome to our reading page. At Amotherby school, reading is a central part of daily life and underpins learning across the whole curriculum. We are committed to developing confident, fluent readers who enjoy books and value reading for both pleasure and information. Through a carefully structured approach and a rich range of texts, we support every child to achieve high standards in reading.

Reading at Amotherby

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and is carefully structured to support progress from EYFS through to Year 6. From Year 2 (beginning in the Spring term) to Year 6, we follow a 10-day writing cycle that embeds high-quality reading experiences, including reader’s theatre, regular fluency checks, and echo and choral reading to build confidence, accuracy, and expression. In EYFS, reading is taught in line with the EYFS curriculum, with a strong focus on early language development, phonics, and a love of stories, supported by recognised early reading frameworks. This consistent, whole-school approach ensures that all children develop strong comprehension skills and a lifelong enjoyment of reading. Our Reading Race

Our school Reading Race is an exciting initiative designed to promote a love of reading and highlight its importance. Children are encouraged to read regularly at home and school, developing both confidence and enjoyment in reading. Every five reads earns a block, which is added to their Reading Race progress. As children collect blocks, they move closer to achieving set milestones. Reaching certain numbers of blocks is rewarded, motivating pupils to read often and celebrate their success.

 

Amotherby Reading Challenge

At Amotherby School, we love to challenge our readers and have created a reading challenge for year groups from Year 2 - 6! Our challenge reading spine is packed with a variety of brilliant books that will make children think, laugh, imagine and explore new worlds. Some stories are classics that have been loved for generations, while others are modern adventures full of excitement and big ideas.

 

World Book Day at Amotherby 2026

We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day in school! Instead of dressing up, everyone brought a prop linked to a favourite children’s book. It was fantastic to see the wide range of creative ideas, and pupils enjoyed sharing their props and talking about the stories that inspired them.

As part of the celebrations, the Year 5 Bookworms club created a beautiful book sunburst for the library window. The colourful display celebrates our love of reading and books, and it is now proudly displayed in the hall for everyone to enjoy.
