Writing
Welcome to our Writing page. At Amotherby, our children are encouraged to express their ideas with confidence and creativity. We nurture strong writing skills across the school through supportive teaching, rich vocabulary, and inspiring learning experiences. Our approach helps children develop clarity, accuracy, and a genuine love of writing.
Writing at Amotherby
In EYFS, writing is taught in line with the EYFS framework, with a strong focus on developing early mark-making, letter formation, and a love of writing. As children progress to Year 1, they are supported in composing clear, meaningful sentences through oral rehearsal, storytelling, and shared writing experiences. This early focus on sentence composition builds the foundations for confident and successful writers as they progress through the school.
Writing from Year 2 to Year 5 at our school is taught through a carefully structured 10-day writing cycle, ensuring clear progression and consistency. Each unit begins with a teacher-created excellence model to set high expectations and inspire pupils, followed by dedicated punctuation and grammar days that build accuracy and confidence. Teachers model the writing process step by step, allowing children to understand how ideas are developed and refined. Pupils then create ‘have a go’ drafts before producing a final piece, written up neatly in their best handwriting.

Handwriting
Our school uses the Letter-join handwriting scheme from EYFS through to Year 6, providing a structured and progressive approach to developing clear, legible writing skills. The scheme offers interactive teaching resources, animations and worksheets that support letter formation, joining and fluency, with regular practice built into the curriculum to help children improve their handwriting in a fun, engaging way. It builds from the youngest years through to fluent cursive writing as children progress, helping them achieve confidence and consistency in their written work. This whole-school approach ensures continuity in handwriting development and supports pupils in meeting national expectations for legible, fluent writing.
