Maths at Amotherby
At Amotherby Community Primary School, we believe that everyone can succeed in maths, and that developing a positive mindset is essential for becoming confident, capable mathematicians. Our maths curriculum is carefully designed to ensure learning is deep, secure and progressive for all pupils.
We use White Rose Maths as a starting point for our curriculum planning, following a teaching for mastery approach. Lessons are sequenced to build knowledge step by step, with all pupils working on the same mathematical concepts while being appropriately supported or challenged. Teaching is underpinned by the five big ideas of mastery: coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation.
Our approach to maths is set out clearly in our “Maths on a Page” document, which explains our intent, implementation and impact. This ensures a consistent, high-quality approach across the school, with a strong focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections between concepts and learn from mistakes.
We place great importance on secure number sense, with regular fluency sessions, the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, and targeted same-day support where needed. Through this approach, pupils develop the confidence and skills they need to apply mathematics across the wider curriculum and in real-life contexts.
